<p>Of course it&#8217;s good to know what you&#8217;re feeling.  There&#8217;s even a little value in being able to identify those feelings.  And to be able to choose what you feel &#8211; that&#8217;s almost heaven!  But when you try to control?  It&#8217;s guaranteed to not  end well.</p>
<p><strong>The big misunderstanding with the conventional theory of emotional intelligence is they make no distinction between <em>real</em> emotion and <em>artificial, &#8216;man-made&#8217;</em> emotion.</strong>  When you don&#8217;t know the distinction, you&#8217;re lost in the trap of trying to manipulate your emotions in some way.  Of <em>course</em> you&#8217;ll try to control them.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s the problem:</p>
<p>By trying to control your emotions, you are creating artificial emotion.  Control creates the very problem that control seeks to end.  Emotions aren&#8217;t your problem.  Trying to control is your problem.</p>
<p>You end up trying to control your emotions today to make up for your past efforts of trying to control them.  You see?   Controlling emotions starts in childhood.  Rather than just feeling all of our feelings instead we start repressing them.</p>
<p>Oh, it&#8217;s only the &#8216;bad&#8217; ones at first.  Stuff a little fear here, a little anger there.  A little despair.  A little sadness.  A little loneliness.  What&#8217;s so bad about that?  Who wants to feel lonely?  Nobody, obviously.  </p>
<p>So what happens?  We try to not feel the feelings by repressing them.  In other words, we try to control them.  And at first it appears to be successful.  We don&#8217;t feel them so they must be gone.  Problem solved!</p>
<p>Or is it?  You can&#8217;t just throw emotions in the closet like old toys and be done with them.  Emotions are a living energy.  They&#8217;re powerful.  They&#8217;re alive.  You can&#8217;t kill them by repressing them.  Instead what you&#8217;re doing is slowing building a time bomb.</p>
<p>So what are the experts not seeing here?</p>
<p><strong>Life is an emotional experience.</strong>  Your goal is not a matter of trying to be happy and loving.  It&#8217;s about opening up your heart wide and full to feel every feeling that comes up through your emotional wellspring.</p>
<p>Because when you feel everything, then you can pretty much feel whatever you want.  Or rather, when you&#8217;re <em>willing</em> to feel everything.
